(1946 - 1971)

Ranked 2nd in the Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003, Duane Allman is noted for his slide guitar techinique and improvisational skills. He founded the Allman Brothers Band along with his brother Gregg, and played major roles in Derek and the Dominos led by Eric Clapton. Other than playing lead guitar in his own band, Duane held countless other sessions with other renowned guiatrists. However, the band's success of their album, At Fillmore East was followed by the death of Duane Allman due to a motorcylce accident. 13 months later, the band's bassist Berry Oakley died in a similar accident, and only three blocks away from where Duane died. The song "Free Bird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd was dedicated to Duane shortly after his death.
