Spongebob Squarepants and Friends

This page will tell how Spongebob Squarepants came to be!

Spongebob Squarepants is the most-watched show on the Nickelodian channel! Spongebob was created in the year 1999 by director Stephen Hillenburg. Stephen Hillenburg taught and studied marine biology for most of his early life and during this part of his life he also became fascinated with animation and wrote a comic book called, "The Intertidal Zone." This started off his career as an animator and director. Joe Murray, the creator of the show Rocko's Modern Life, found Stephen Hillenburg and wanted him to do directing on his show. Hillenburg accepted the opportunity. He joined the Rocko's Modern Life crew as a writer, producer, and storyboard artist. While Hillenburg was working on Rocko's Modern Life he met and became friends with actor, Tom Kenny, and after seeing his comical genius, Hillenburg wanted Tom Kenny to work with him on a new show. Hillenburg came up with the idea of Spongebob Squarepants using his knowledge and fascination with marine biology and cartoons. Hillenburg put together a crew for the characters with Tom Kenny, several Nickelodeon veterans, and some former Rocko's Modern Life actors. Hillenburg and his team came up with the general idea of the show and proposed their show to the Nickelodeon executives. The show was an instant hit with the executives of Nickelodeon and they wanted the Spongebob Squarepants team to keep making episodes of the hilarious talking sponge under the sea.
