Surfing started as an old hawaiian culture where the chief was the most skilled rider on a board made from the best tree. Back then, surfing was more for the upper class because they were the ones that had access to the best tree to make surfboards and they wouldn't let lower class citizens on their beaches. Chiefs would gain or demonstrate their authority by the displayed skills on a surfboard.

But, the art of surfing was actually first observed by Europeans in Tahiti when they were out at sea on a ship. They noted that the surfers would ride long, big planks of wood and also canoes on waves. Surfing then was called "fa'ase'e" or "se'egalu".
