Stan is one of the most well-rounded characters. He is not really hated by anyone and always tries to be fair. He is the only one of the boys that has a girlfriend, but he always vomits when he sees her. You get to know the most about his family. His dad Mr. Marsh is a very funny character and some episodes revolve around him. Like the famous "creme fraiche" episode where you barely see any of the four kids, and it revolves around Mr. Marsh and his home cooking fetish. When there are problems in South Park, Stan and Kyle try to give some reason and help fix the problem. He is supposed to be portrayed as the normal character, while every other character has some trademark trait. He is voiced by Trey Parker and is supposed to represent him. Stan is good friends with Kyle, but usually hates Cartman. He openly mocks Cartman's fatness.

Kyle is also another sort of normal character. He kind of represents the creator Matt Stone. Kyle is best friends with Stan, though they do argue sometimes. Kyle's family is the Jewish family, and Cartman hates him for that fact. Kyle has an adopted baby brother from Canada. Under that green cap Kyle has an affro of red hair. Kyle is also originally from New Jersey, which we find out in that spoof of Jersey Shore episode. Kyle is intended to be the smart one of the group. Although he is a child, the creators intend to introduce and make fun of politcal and cultural issues through his dialouge. Even though the show is strictly to get a laugh out of its viewers, there is often a moral at the end that Kyle expresses in a corny way. The creators contemplated killing of Kyle because he is too similar to Stan in season five, but they decided he was too essential to the show.
