Karl Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg in 1938 and then moved to Paris at the age of fourteen. One of his first things he did in the fashion world was to create costumes for La Scala opera. After winning a compition in 1955, Karl went to work with Pierre Balmain, and later worked with Jean Patou, Krizia, Charles Jourdan and Valentino. In 1967, Lagerfeld joined Fendi and then a decade later joined Chloe, two major fashion companies. Then in 1983 he joined Chanel which he is known for around the world.

Today he still creates masterpieces for Chanel and also has his own label, Karl Lagerfeld, which he channels to be "intellectual sexiness". He also sold his brand name to Tommy Hilfiger in 2005, but maintained full design involment. In 1997, Vouge described him as "unparralled interpreter of the mood of the moment."
