Name of task: Creating a Website

Think of a website you use frequently. Have you really ever thought about the time and effort put into creating that webpage? For this task I had to create a website on a topic of my choice and a flash animation that relates to the topic. To be able to put as much information possible about my topic on the webpage, I had to complete some research and find pictures to go along with the information. With the information and pictures used, I created a works cited page with the proper MLA formatting. The process before beginning this common task started with learning how to use both Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash then practice using these applications. With Dreamweaver, there were many practice websites that were created that helped to learn all the different parts of the website and just how to begin one. When using Flash, there were also many practice animations completed that also helped teach how to create an animation on my own. Skills that I both acquired and demonstrated through this task were time management, problem solving, thinking creatively, and independence. Time management was a big part of this task because although I had around a month and a half to complete it, I still had to manage my time and decide how much work I needed to complete in each task and had to have a plan of what I was doing to ensure I would not fall behind. This also goes along with the independence aspect of this task. After learning all the parts necessary to complete this task, I was on my own to complete it and decide what I was going to do. Problem solving came into play once in a while when I came across something I did not know how to do, or thought about doing but hadn’t learned. For this I would try to figure it out on my own looking around the application, but if it became too time consuming I either moved on to something else or asked for some help. Thinking creatively was prominent in this task because all the ideas that made up the website as a whole I had to think up myself. Also the design of the website and the design of each page had to be thought about creatively to make it look interesting.

The process for creating this website was a long and at sometimes tedious one. It started out by creating a layout of what the website was going to be like and what was going to be on the pages. Along with the layout, a chart was created to show how the links would be laid out. For example, one main link was characters and from that were two other link; old and new characters. After creating these and describing each page of my website, I started the actual website in Dreamweaver. I created all the necessary pages and put the information and pictures needed on each. After I completed all the pages I created the works cited page and created my flash animation. Once the flash was completed I inserted it into the webpage and tested it to ensure that it worked. When I came around to any obstacles I dealt with them either on my own or, if they were too time consuming or difficult, I asked another person for help. For example, I was trying to figure out how to change the background of each of the web pages, but couldn’t figure it out. After some time, I wasn’t figuring it out and eventually asked for some help. This task also helped me understand web design a little better. I realized that it is a longer and much more difficult process that I thought between coming up with original ideas and the different factors of creating it in general.

The completion of this task has also helped as a student because it has helped learn how to problem solve a little better when it comes to more difficult and time consuming problems. Also it has helped me with my time management. It is easy to kind of blow off tasks when they are long term and find that you are rushing at that last minute. Finally this task has also strengthened my creativity because I had to contently think of creative ways to display pictures and information about my topic. I anticipate on using the content and skills learned in my future of both a student and beyond my student career whether it be for a job pr just as practice on my own.
