Collies used in competitions may look similar to collies that are kept as pets, but they are not. Show collies have a few characteristics that differ from collies kept as pets.

Show collies have to have eyes the same color and cannot have any eye condition. These collies must also have a smooth, well-rounded muzzle (nose). Collies used in competitions must have ears that are slightly bent forward. The coat must be abundant except on the head and usually the legs as well. The outer coat must be rough when touched and the undercoat must be smooth. The collie must be responsive and have an active disposition. While in the show collies must also stand naturally straight and firm.
