A foul is a term for when the ball goes past a line drawn on the softball field. When a batter hits a foul, meaning they hit the ball past the line, they get a strike. The third strike or foul does not, usually, count as a strikout. However, if you bunt and hit a foul on the third strike, you are out.

See the lines from home to first and third to home? Notice that they continue to go past third base/first base? That's because they are foul lines. Any ball that goes beyond this line when hit is considered a foul.
