When a runner steals, they are advancing to the next base without being required to. There are, however, restrictions on when the person is allowed to steal. These restrictions vary depending on the type of league a person participates in. For example, most school teams allow the batter to steal once the pitcher releases the ball. Some rec teams only allow the batter to steal once the ball passes the plate.

There are several ways a person might steal. Here are a few:

Before you decide to steal, make sure to look for your coach or teammate standing by third. If they want you to steal, they will give you a sign that you will have discussed earlier. If they do not give you a sign, you can still steal-just be careful!
