A Hold up in the Surfing Era

Although surfing may be very popular now, there was a dislike a few hundred years ago stopping the world of surfing.  Europeans had begun to use Hawaii as a Pacific crossroad and trading post.  Not long after that in 1821, Calvinist missionaries arrived from Britain to impose their religion and repress ideologies on a population which they had viewed as frivolous.  The Missionaries decided that surfing was not alright and banned surfing, which almost wiped the pastime out completely.  If it was not for a few natives and curious tourists like Mark Twain surfing may have disappeared.  These people continued to surf, keeping the era alive.
