The Origin of the House Cat

It was likely that the first cats were domesticated by farmers in the Fertile Crescent about 10,000 - 12,000 years ago and they were used to catch mice and other rodents.

But to go back even further...

Between 70,000 and 100,000 years ago wild cats called Near Eastern wildcats, or Felis sylvestris, are widely believed to of given rise to the genetics that eventually came to become the domesticated cats we know today.

The Near Eastern wildcat still roams the deserts of Israel, Saudi Arabia, and other Middle Eastern countries.
