When to use coping mechanisms

When in a stressful situation, for example, a dog dying, facing a big test, or were just told some very bad news, it is important to train your brain to think over the situation and how it is best to react. It is okay to cry, yell, or punch a pillow but when it becomes out of hand such as self-harm, inflicting pain on others, or vandalism of property it will just create more stress.

Feelings come from the neocortex, emotional, and reptilian parts of the brain.


Part of the brain that allows humans to know and name what their feelings are. This is the part of the brain that thinks about the emotions and processes why one is feeling that way.

Each person's neocortex gives meaning to that person's own emotional experience towards an incident. Two people do not have the same reaction!


The emotional brain is the link to our thinking and keeps us alive! This is the very sensitive part of the brain!


These instincts help us for survival purposes. This part of the brain controls impulses that tend to be quick and result in anger or avoidance of a situation when one feels "threatened".
