Plumed Basilisk
  • Species of lizard native to Latin America
  • Natural range covers from Mexico to Ecuador
  • Omnivorous – will eat insects, small mammals (rodents), smaller species of lizards, fruits, and flowers
  • Predators include: raptors, possums, and snakes
  • Lay 5-15 eggs at a time in warm, damp sand or soil
  • Can stay underwater for up to 30 minutes
  • Able to run across short distances of water using both its feet and tail for support
  • Known as the “Jesus Christ lizard” in Costa Rica
