  • Underside of the shell is called the plastron
  • Has both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton
  • Can vary in size from a few centimeters to two meters
  • Generally reclusive and shy
  • Most are herbivores: grasses, weeds, leafy greens, flowers, and certain fruits
  • Main diet consists of alfalfa, clover, dandelions, and leafy weeds
  • Will also eat various insects
