My Chemical Romance was formed in 2001, right after the September 11'th attack. At the time Gerard Way was attending Art school in New York, and witnessed the planes going into the World Trade Center. This sight influenced his life, and from that point on he decided that he wanted to do something for other people, so he and ex drummer, Matt Pellissier, started a band. After they wrote a couple of songs, and found out that Gerard couldn't play guitar and sing at the same time they called up Ray Toro. The three of them recorded a demo in Matt's attic and gave out for people to listen too. Mikey Way, the younger brother of Gerard, loved the demo and also wanted to join the band. The demo was also loved by Eyeball Records and they where signed not to long giving it to them. As they recorded their first album they meet Frank Iero at a party, and instantly became friends. After Frank's band, Pencey Prep, broke up he was asked to join My Chemical Romance so that the guitar sound would be filled out. My Chemical released their first album in 2002 called "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love"

One year later of the release of bullets, they resigned to Reprise Records and went on tour with Avenged Sevenfold. After they finished touring in 2004, they released another album called, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. This album went platinum within a year. As My Chemical Romance was on tour in Japan, there was arguments between members Matt and Ray. Due to fact that Matt kept missing beats while reforming he was let go. Bob Byar, a friend of their manager at Reprise, was then asked to fill in for Matt. Bob officially joined the group after shooting the video "I'm Not Okay, I Promise" off the album Three Cheers.

On October 24, 2006 "The Black Parade" was released. In February, 2007, the first concert of The Black Parade in the United States at the Verizon Stadium in Manchester, New Hampshire, My Chemical Romance announced the addition of James Dewees [Reggie and the Full Effect]. Dewees would not be preeminently joining the band, but he would tour with them throughout the tour playing the keyboards.
