Jonathan Larson was born on February 4, 1960 in White Plains, New York. As a child he was in many music lessons and drama clubs. He played the tuba in high school and attended Adelphi University in Garden City, New York. He grew up in poverty and waited tables for a living. Larson spent seven years trying to bring his musical RENT to the stage, which would later be a enormous success that he would not be able to see. Larson died January 25, 1996, from aortic aneurysm in his Manhattan home, the night before his hit Off Broadway show RENT's first preview opened. The show brought theater closer to younger audiences and was sold out within 24 hours of opening night.
