Before, they were the Boston Red Sox, they were known as the Boston Americans. But they were sometimes called the Boston Pilgrims. The Boston Americans formed in the American League in 1901. But in 1907, they then adopted the name "Red Sox". This name came from the Boston Red Stockings, a very powerful National League team in the 1870's and 1880's. John I. Taylor, the Boston Red Sox owner at the time says,"From now on we'll wear red stockings, and I'm grabbing that name Red Sox!" (2007 Boston Red Sox Media Guide)
