After a first year of nearly making the playoffs, a second year of quarterfinals, and a third year of making the semi-finals the Mariner hockey team finally reached the State Finals in only its 4th year of existence. The first game of the year was rather close against a not so good Middletown team. It seemed that what was expected to be a mediocre season would turn into a terrible one. Many people expected very little of the team based on the fact they had 3 seniors who hadn't played hockey before the team started and 10 freshman anchoring the core of the team. The season continued on and the mariners seemed to be a 500% like team. Having ups and downs all over the place the mariners lost an important game to Prout and coach Chris Lucier wasn't to happy. Captain Matt Westcott and Assistant Captain Tanner Littlefield sent the team a message, they decided to go on a team run, and then off to the northend of town to play some fun harmless pond hockey. The following day the coach didn't even come on the ice simply because he was disgusted with the teams performance and practice was led by the team. Now with the coach impressed of the effort the kids put in and the players with a high morale the mariners won the last 5 games of the season by a large margin of points. They placed 4th overall with a playoff berth and a 11-4-1 record. To the playoffs the team went. Freshman were inexperienced but stepped up big throughout the whole thing. Four games in a row the Mariners knocked out Situate and Mount Hope to get ready to faceoff against the cross town rival South Kingstown in the state final.. for the rest of the story read the state championship page.
