Humans have been in a constant state of war with the Orcs or some other grand evil force since the first dark portal was opened to Draenor. Recently, they have had a touchy alliance with the Horde, but they have been focused mainly upon fighting the Burning Legion. They have a history of being betrayed by seemingly loyal heroes who have gone insane for power. Medivh, one of the most powerful wizards, opened the Dark Portal to let the orcs through so that he may control them and rule the world. The newest threat has been the Scourge, led by Arthas, once the heir to Lordaeron, which is now in ruins after he killed his own father. The humans are now being led by a child, for lack of an older heir.
Night Elves have been around since the first inhabitants took up residence by the Well of Eternity. The night elves were once simple creatures, but the well changed them into the beings they became. They eventually became the guardians of nature, and have adapted to the night in which they hide. They are normally led by Malfurion Stormrage, but he was deep in his Emerald Dream when he mysteriously got lost in another realm. He basically is stuck in a coma, while his girlfriend Tyrande Whisperwind rules the Night Elves.
Dwarfs are one of the people who live under the mountain. They have always been stuck to their own matters underground, unless the world was in dire need of their assisstance. They are the greatest smiths and diggers available to the civilized races. Recently they have started digging deep into the ground in search of their farthest origins. They are led Muradin Bronzebeard, who, along with his two brothers, is a hero of the Alliance.
Gnomes are an imaginative and inventive race, which is sometimes mistaken for insanity. Due to the dwarves incessant archeological digging for their past, millions of troggshave found their way into Gnomeregan, their underground home. The gnomes, ever the inventive problem-solvers, filled Gnomeregan with poisonous gas... unfottunately it killed more gnomes than troggs. They were nearly completely destroyed with over 80% of their population dying. The gnomes evacuated and were allowed to live with their close allies the dwarves.
Draenei were once a part of the mighty Eredar, but are the only survivors. They were the followers of the Exarch Velen who lead alongside Kil'jaedan and Archimonde. When Sargeras offered power beyond all imagination, the other two accepted while Velen was forced to flee with his followers, who were named the Draenei. They fled on the Exodar (not sure if its a space ship) and landed in Outland where the currently peaceful orcs lived. When the orcs went on the warpath, they attacked the Draenei to test out their power. The Draenei were almost destroyed, but some escaped on the Exodar once more, which crash landed in Kalimdor. The Draenei took up residence in the Azuremyst Islands around their crashed mothership.
