Keelboats have a keel, a fin on the bottom of the boat that counterweights the force of the wind in the sails to keep the boat upright. The basic keelboats are a standard sloop, one mast with a small triangular sail in front (called the jib) and a larger mainsail off the back of the mast. They usually use the tiller steering system and have a self-bailing cockpit and sometimes a small outboard motor. Most basic keelboats also include a small cabin, usually used for storage or the holding of small, simple amenities.
