In order to become a witch and/or learn witchcraft, you must approach it with an open mind and a willingness to learn. You must know beforehand whether or not you are okay with learning something that you may have been told is bad your whole life. You must be able to throw away the discriminations against witches and witchcraft.

The absolute first step to learning witchcraft and becoming a witch is to learn as much as possible about witchcraft. You can learn from books and journals both on and offline, in printed books or on the Internet. You can learn alone and teach yourself and be a solo witch, or you can learn from other, more experienced witches. You must learn a respect for the body, the mind, the soul, Mother Nature, and the powers of the Universe.

You can't learn everything from textbooks, though, and since witchcraft is an earth-based and Nature-centered religion, you have to go out into Nature and observe what you see. Learn from the birds and the trees and the flowers and find a place in you to appreciate the fragility of spider webs and the beauty of dewdrops on leaves in the early morn.

You should then write down these observations in a notebook or a three-ring binder or in a document on a computer. Write down why you want to be a witch and how you envision the God and Goddess. This will someday become your Book of Shadows. My Book is a pretty green notebook with a picture of a painting of a lighthouse in front of a beautiful sunset on the cover. You can use almost anything, really, for a Book. Many people chose to use a three-ring binder so they can take pages in and out as they please. Others choose to keep their entire Book of Shadows on a computer.

After learning from other witches' books and journals and from Nature, you need to learn a bit about magick. Magick is not waving a wand and saying a cute little rhyme and having the very Universe bending for your every whim. Magick is when someone succeeds in resolving someone's apparently mysterious problem by means that defy logical explanation and analysis. You do magick by raising and channeling the energy within you (some people call it chakra) to receive the desired result.

In order to learn how to perform magick, you must also learn the principles of

- casting circles

- calling quarters

- invoking the God/Goddess

- raising and directing the energies within you and around you

- grounding, centering, and closing the circle

You should also learn how to meditate and how to do visualization exercises, how to call energy from the moon, sun, and stars, and how to be calm and still, because some spells and rituals call for being calm and motionless for a lengthy period of time. Also, learning how to be calm and quiet will help you to hear the voice of the God and Goddess when they call.

There really is no specific ritual to becoming a witch. You don't sign a book or drink blood or anything like that to become a witch. You simply need to create the witch's mind set in you and be able to maintain that.

There are ten basic rules to being a witch, and they are so basic that humans follow most of these rules without really noticing it.

1. Take Responsibility

You and you alone are responsible for what you do and don't do. You need to be able to make a mistake and say, "Yes, I made a mistake, but I'm going to learn from it." You must accept that everything in your life is there because you chose to have it there.

2. Center Yourself

You need to be hyper-aware of your inner self and the true feelings in your heart. Learning meditative ways to regain your center will help you to find it and keep it.

3. Cleanse Your Energy Field

When casting spells, and even just in everyday life, it is important to keep negative energies out of your life as much as possible. To cleanse your body, you can fast for three days (unless you have a medical issue that will not allow you to). Taking a ritual bath by candlelight while burning sandalwood incense or casting a circle and taking at least thirty calming breaths will also help cleanse the energy around you.

4. Clear the Path

"Clearing the path" basically means forgiving yourself and those who have done wrong against you. Gaining revenge against those who have hurt you will only return to you three-fold, so ever mind the law of three times three. Ritual baths and doing aura-cleansing exercises are the easiest ways to "clear the path".

5. Eat Properly

Your body needs to be strong in order to channel the most energy, and the easiest way to achieve a strong body is by eating properly.

6. Breathe Clean Air

Take long breaths of clean air and avoid taking shallow breaths or breathing in cigarette smoke, pollution, and smog. Even just a few deep breaths every day will help clear your lungs. Take a deep breath while counting to seven in your mind, hold your breath for a count of seven, and breath out slowly to a count of seven and repeat. Your head will feel clearer and your body will feel lighter.

7. Regular Exercise

Another easy way to keep your body strong is about thirty minutes of exercise a day. Every day has twenty-four hours in it, and about nine of which should be dedicated to sleeping. That leaves at least fifteen hours of day, and if you exercise for thirty minutes, that leaves you with fourteen and a half hours to do whatever. Go outside for a little while each day, too -- sunlight is good for the body. The stronger your body is, the easier it will be to channel energy.

8. Sleep Restfully

Sleeping enough hours each night and waking up in the morning feeling refreshed is extremely important for your body. If you should be sleeping for nine hours every night, four hours of sleep won't cut it. Keep a regular sleeping pattern. If you go to bed at nine thirty one night, don't go to bed the next night at three a.m. Your body won't thank you. Getting enough sleep will lead to a more positive outlook on life and a more relaxed body, both of which are essential to doing witchcraft.

9. Expand the Love in Your Life

Expanding love in your life will help you to be able to channel more positive feelings and more positive energies through you. Expanding love in your life doesn't necessarily mean falling in love with a lot of people -- it could just mean making new friends and keeping them close.

10. Have Faith in Your Power

You will not be able to perform witchcraft if you don't have faith in your powers. If you don't believe a spell will work, then you're right; it won't work for you. However, if you believe with all your heart that a spell will work, then it is highly unlikely that your spell will fail.

Bide the Wiccan Law ye must
In perfect love and perfect trust
Cast the Circle thrice about
To keep the evil spirits out
To bind the spell every time
Let the spell be spake in rhyme
Soft of eye and light of touch
Speak little and listen much
Deosil go by the waxing moon
Chanting out the Witches' Rune
Widdershins go by the waning moon
Chanting out the baneful rune
When the Lady's moon is new
Kiss the hand to her, times two
When the moon rides at her peak
Then your heart's desires seek
Heed the North Wind's mighty gale
Lock the doors and drop the sail
When the wind comes from the South
Love will kiss thee on the mouth
When the wind comes from the West
Departed souls will have no rest
When the wind comes from the East
Expect the new and set the feast
Nine woods in the cauldron go
Burn them fast and burn them slow
Elder be the Lady's tree
Burn it now or cursed you'll be
When the Wheel begins to turn
Let the Beltane fires burn
When the Wheel has turned to Yule
Light the log and the Horned One rules
Heed ye flower, bush, and tree
By the Lady, blessed be
Where the rippling waters go
Cast a stone and truth you'll know
When ye have a true need
Hearken not to others' greed
With a fool no season spend
Lest ye be counted as his friend
Merry meet and merry part
Bright the cheeks and warm the heart
Mind the Threefold Law ye should
Three times bad and three times good
When misfortune is enow
Wear the blue star on thy brow
True in Love ever be
Lest thy lover's false to thee
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill
An' it harm none, do what ye will
