History of Pole Vaulting

Poles were first used as a way of conquering obsticles in swampy areas mostly in Europe. These practices date back all the way to the early 1800's. The picture above shows german pesents getting around in a marsh using poles. Competions arose from this style of vaulting but they were based on distance, not height.

The first known height-based pole vaulting competition was held at the Ulverston Football and Cricket Club in Cumbria (northwest England) in 1843. Modern competition began around 1850 and soon after, it was added as an activity for many clubs.
