Initially, poles were made from stiff materials such as bamboo or aluminum. Competitive pole vaulting first used solid ash poles. Todays poles are made by wrapping pre-cut sheets of fiber glass that contains a resin around a metal pole mandrel to form the shape. Carbon fiber is added to increase the strength and at the same time, decrease the weight of the pole.
