Physical Features

The physical features of a sea lion can vary from male to female. For example, male sea lions can reach from 6.5 to 8 feet long, and 440 to 880 pounds. In comparison, a female sea lion can reach from 5 to 6.5 feet, and weigh up to 110 to 240 pounds.

Body Shape

The California sea lion's body shape is a sleek and streamlined body; making it easy for them to glide through the water with ease.

Coat Color

Their coat colors vary, adult males having a chocolate brown coat, while females and young males have a tan coat. Finally, pups are dark chocolate brown. When sea lions get wet, their coats turn either brown or black.


A California sea lions flipprs are large and almost winglike. There are no claws and no hair on the foreflippers, making it easier for the sea lion to move it through the water. Their front flippers are primarily used for steering and mobility when walking. They have nails to help grip onto surfaces when walking.
