The German Shepherd is a historical breed, used in World Warr I, World War II, The Korean War, and the Vietnam War. They are known for their size, intelligence, and work ethic.

Compared to German Shepherd police dogs, the second most common breed is the Belgian Malinois, imported from Europe, and similar to GSDs, but they are smaller and more sleek. Belgian Malinois are known for their endurance, speed, intelligence, and high intensity.

K9 officers live with their handlers on duty and on retirement. The handler is responsible for feeding, grooming, and taking care of the dog.The officers treat the dogs as their own pets.
