Bernie Sanders is an Independent who is seeking the Democratic nomination for President in 2016. The longest serving Independent in U.S. congressional history, Sanders was elected to represent Vermont in the House of Representatives from 1991 to 2007. In 2005 he ran for Senate and won, and was reelected in 2012 with 71 percent of the vote. His main focus is on issues involving income inequality, climate change, education, and government surveillance.
