Description of the Unit, Lesson or Project

The students complete an instructional unit on Arthropods. This includes the completion of a written report outlining student research on a particular arthropod, such as a scorpion or shrimp. The students then use a R.A.F.T. to create a writing piece which includes factual information about arthropods.Using this writing piece, the students will create a digital Story.

Standards Addressed:

Body:

The students learn about Arthropods, and sub classification groups including: Crustaceans, Arachnids, Centipedes, and Insects through varied instruction. This instruction includes the use of the Prentice Hall Life Science Textbook entitled Animals, lecture, discussions, overheads, diagrams, matching activities, graphic organizers and the like. They have learned about these organisms anatomy, behavior, habitats, adaptations, and how they react to their environment. As part of this unit, the students are assigned a particular arthropod, and spend several days using the school library as well as the internet to research particular information. They are given a research outline, a rubric, and a format to follow. They are provided with an outline to guide the research. The produce a written report, which includes the information gathered through research. It is a one to two page written document. They must also attach a works cited page, and include a picture of the arthropod researched. The students are then given a R.A.F.T. and they use this handout to focus a separate writing assignment for which they will now be a bit more creative. They will work on the Write Trait of Fluency through this writing piece. The content they include in this writing piece is the same for all.The must include at least 8 facts about arthropods, but are given choice in terms of the role they will assume, the target audience, and the format that the writing piece shall take. They will include information about the organismsí anatomy, behavior, habitat, and senses by writing a letter, a poem, or a story. This writing piece will be assessed through a rubric as well.Upon completion, the students will have the opportunity to create a digital story, using Photostory 3 software. They will gather appropriate images on-line, and narrate using their writing piece. They may set the piece to music as well.In doing this they will learn how to use technology in combination with developing better writing skills.

Project Assessment:

The studentsí original research report will be assessed using a rubric designed to look at both the writing, and the inclusion of relevant and appropriate scientific facts. The second writing piece will be assessed using a separate rubric. This rubric is designed to look at the write trait of Fluency, as well as the inclusion of appropriate scientific facts. The digital story will be assessed with yet another rubric designed to assess the technology skills employed.
