Computer Network Acceptable Use Policy

 Narragansett School System

Dear Parents,

Narragansett School System is pleased to be able to offer direct Internet access to students and staff.  Students may access the Internet in the Media Center, in most individual classrooms or in the computer lab.

What is possible?

Access to the Internet will enable students to explore thousands of libraries, databases, museums and to participate in online projects with Internet users from around the world.  While the purposes of our school are to use Internet resources for constructive educational goals, students may find ways to access inappropriate material.  We believe that the benefits to students from access to the Internet in the form of information resources and opportunities for collaboration exceed the disadvantages.

What is expected?

Students are responsible for appropriate behavior on the school's computer network just as they are in the classroom and other school environments.  The user is personally responsible for his/her actions in accessing and utilizing the school's computer resources.  Students are advised never to access, keep, or send anything that they would not want their parents or teachers to see.  The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked if abused.

  1. The following activities are unacceptable and are strictly forbidden:
    1. Misusing copyrighted materials, software, sound recordings or images.
    2. Harassment of any sort (Harassment as defined by established school system policy, local, state and federal law).
    3. Plagiarism
    4. Accessing sexually explicit or objectionable materials
    5. Disseminating destructive / disruptive material
    6. Advertising or other commercial activities unless approved by school administration.
    7. Downloading non-educational files.
    8. Violating the privacy of other users.
    9. Unauthorized use of the school's name.
    10. Distributing personal information such as name, address, and telephone numbers of any students or staff.
    11. Damaging computer equipment, software or network data
    12. Using obscene or inappropriate language, messages or pictures in any format.
    13. Wasting or inappropriate use of limited resources.

  1. The user will follow guidelines as established by school staff for a specific project or report, along with all school rules for behavior and conduct.

Ultimately, parents and guardians of minors are responsible for setting and conveying the standards children should follow when using these resources.  Please discuss the above guidelines with your child, sign below and return to school.

I will follow the Narragansett School System Computer Network Acceptable Use Policy by being a responsible computer network user in my school.
